Jen Scanlon grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she received her BFA degree from Carnegie-Mellon University (CMU) in 1992. To help prime her skills before her four-year journey through CMU, Jen attended pre-college summer programs at other Universities including the Rhode Island School of Design, Parsons School of Design in Paris and Saturday morning art classes at CMU during her junior and senior years at Mt. Lebanon High School.

At CMU, it was under the guidance of her illustration professor, Fred Carlson, where she developed and perfected the photorealistic technique of drawing with colored pencils.
